Cause and Effect Essay on Divorce – Narrowing Your Topic

More than half of the marriages in America end in divorce. That’s a pretty stunning figure, and it could be your introductory statement of a cause and effect essay on divorce.

When you write a cause and effect essay on any topic, you will need to make important decisions so that the content you intend to cover does not get “out of hand.” Depending upon your assignment, here are the first decisions:

  • Am I able to write an essay that addresses only the causes of an event or phenomenon?
  • Am I able to write one that only presents the effects of a condition or event?
  • Do I have to cover both causes and effects? If so, where do I stop in the chain of causes and effects? Writing a cause & effect essay on divorce, for example, can become rather complex. You may begin by identifying the causes. Divorce is the effect. Divorce then becomes a cause for several other phenomena, or effects, one of which might be the financial strains of ex-partners who now must operate separate households. With a 50%-plus divorce rate, what impact will such financial strain have on the consumer economy? And will that in turn impact employment in consumer-driven business and industry? This could go on and on.

Obviously, you are going to have to refine your topic. The easiest essay would be one that presents only causes or only effects. Even then, however, you may have to narrow your approach, dependent upon the length parameters of your instructor. If, as most experts agree, there are 10 major causes of divorce, you may want to select only three for your causes of divorce essay.

Suggested Topics

With plenty of research in the field of divorce, you will have no difficulty locating resource material on the subject, so choose causes and/or effects that are of most interest to you.

  1. Write a cause of divorce essay that addresses the role that addictions on the part of one or both partners plays in the destruction of a marriage.
  2. Other essays on divorce could include one or more of the following causes
  1. Religious and cultural differences
  2. Financial issues
  3. Boredom
  4. Infidelity
  5. Sexual incompatibility
  6. Communication breakdown
  7. Disagreements over responsibilities of child care/rearing
  8. Physical or emotional abuse

If you intend to create an essay about divorce that presents only effects, then you, too will have no lack of topics on which there is lots of research – here are a few.

  1. For a psychology class, you might produce an essay on the impact of divorce on self-esteem.
  2. Many researchers claim that a divorce is like a death, and that there must be an appropriate grieving process. Write an essay that addresses “grief” as an effect of divorce.
  3. Confine your essay to the effects of divorce on children, and you can refine it even more by age groups – young children, teenagers, or adult children. There are plenty of studies and data related to this effect on specific age groups.

When You Must Address Both Causes and Effects

If you are to cover both causes and effects in your essay, you will really have to narrow your topic to 2-3 causes and perhaps one effect of each cause. Otherwise, as stated above, your content can “get away” from you, and the result will be either a disjointed piece that lacks coherency or one that does not address each cause or effect comprehensively enough. Start your task by thinking in terms of a cause of divorce essay only, and identify a maximum of three causes. Then look to one effect of each of those causes. For example:

  • Financial strain within a marriage is an identified and supported cause of divorce, but it is also an identified and supported effect. People who divorce for this reason often experience the same, if not worse, financial strain when single.
  • Disagreements on child care and rearing is another cause for divorce. One effect is that, after divorce, child care and rearing becomes even more complicated with shared custody and each partner being responsible for full care and rearing during times when s/he has physical custody of those children.

Structuring Your Essay

Fortunately, the cause/effect essay is easy to structure. If you are only addressing cause, each cause deserves a body paragraph or section. The same applies to addressing only effects. If you must address both, each cause and effect(s) should be covered in the same paragraph or section. This provides a logical flow to your essay.
